Laugavegur 2026 season review — and what we know about 2027
A late snow year, higher hut prices and new parking rules: how the 2026 Laugavegur season went, and what you need to know now to book for summer 2027.

The huts have closed and the highland buses have stopped running. Time to look back at the 2026 season on the Laugavegur, and ahead to 2027.
2026 in five points
1. A late start because of snow
After a snowy winter and spring, the road to Landmannalaugar opened late. On 2 July 2026 Ferðafélag Íslands announced that the F208 from the north was open and the wardens were in all the Laugavegur huts. That’s about a week later than the usual start of around 25 June, and one of the latest openings in recent years. There was “considerable snow” between Landmannalaugar and Álftavatn, but none south of Álftavatn.
2. Higher hut prices
A night in an FÍ hut cost 17,000 ISK in 2026, up from 15,800 ISK in 2025: an increase of about 8%. Camping was around 3,400–3,600 ISK per person.
3. Parking in Landmannalaugar needs a booking
The parking fee introduced in 2025 continued, and in 2026 you had to book a slot for arrivals between 09:00 and 16:00 (20 June – 13 September), via Parka. A car cost 1,500 ISK.
4. Fairer cancellation terms
FÍ now refunds in full if the road to Landmannalaugar is closed when your trip is due to start. In a late year like 2026, that turned out to matter.
5. Closing again in early October
The huts closed in mid-September as usual. According to road-status trackers, the F208 closed again in early October.
What we know about 2027
- Booking has started. FÍ’s booking site already shows a 2027 calendar. The first 2027 itineraries reportedly went on sale in August 2026, and more dates are being released in batches, as in previous years. Sign up for the FÍ newsletter to hear about new releases.
- New prices. FÍ has published a price list for 1 May 2027 – 30 April 2028. Check it on FÍ’s terms page before you book; we’ll update this article once we’ve confirmed the amounts.
- Fixed itineraries first. As before, huts are sold as 3-, 4- or 5-night packages from north to south.
- Season dates. The official window remains about 25 June – 15 September, but as 2026 showed, the real start depends on the snow.
Our advice for 2027
- Decide your dates early. If you want to hike in July or the first half of August, keep a close eye on the FÍ releases this autumn and winter.
- Stay flexible. Late August and early September are easier to book.
- Book your bus and flights after your huts, not before.
- Don’t want to chase bookings? Organised trips reserve hut space well in advance. The Iceland Trail usually opens its new season in the autumn and has both guided and self-guided options, so it’s worth checking if you want your 2027 dates fixed early.
We’ll update this page as soon as there’s news about the 2027 season.
