Best time to hike the Laugavegur: month by month
When is the Laugavegur Trail open, which month is best, and what happens in a late snow year like 2026? A practical month-by-month overview.

The Laugavegur has a short season. The huts are staffed for about 12 weeks a year, and the exact start depends on snow and on when the Icelandic Road Administration opens the mountain roads to Landmannalaugar.
The official season
Ferðafélag Íslands gives the official season as about 25 June to 15 September. On average the huts open around 25 June and close in mid-September: Hrafntinnusker around 16 September, Álftavatn and Hvanngil around 17 September, Emstrur around 18 September. The Langidalur hut in Þórsmörk has a longer season, from early May to early October.
Before 20 June and after 15 September, expect running water to be switched off at some huts, dry toilets, more snow and a higher risk of bad weather.
Month by month
Late June
The trail can open, but snow often still covers large parts of the first two stages. Snowfields hide the path, snow bridges over streams can collapse, and fog makes navigation hard. This is only for experienced hikers who can navigate with GPS. Rivers are usually still low in the morning.
July
The most popular month. Most snow on the high section melts during July, the days are long (the sun barely sets at the start of the month), and all services run. Huts sell out. Weather is still unpredictable: snow at Hrafntinnusker in July is not unusual.
August
Often the most pleasant month: less snow, wildflowers in Þórsmörk, and the first darker nights from mid-August. Rivers can run higher after warm days or rain. Book early — August is as busy as July.
Early to mid September
Quieter trail, autumn colours on the moss and birch, and the possibility of northern lights at night. The trade-off is colder nights, shorter days, a higher chance of storms and the first snow. Buses run until about 20 September; the huts close around mid-September.
Outside the season
From October to June the Laugavegur is a serious winter expedition, with no wardens and no buses. Only experienced winter mountaineers with full equipment should consider it.
What happened in 2026: a late year
2026 showed how much the start can vary. Snow kept the road to Landmannalaugar (F208 from the north) closed until early July, one of the latest openings in recent years. On 2 July Ferðafélag Íslands announced that the wardens were in all the Laugavegur huts, with considerable snow between Landmannalaugar and Álftavatn and none from Álftavatn southwards.
Between 2021 and 2025, the northern F208 typically opened between late May and late June. If you’re booking for the first week of the season, accept that conditions may be wintry. FÍ refunds in full if the road to Landmannalaugar is still closed.
Our recommendation
- First trek, want the best odds: mid-July to late August.
- Fewer people: the last week of August or the first week of September.
- Avoid: the first week of the season if you’re not comfortable on snow and in fog.
